A sketch taken of the courtroom at Old Bailey where the trial of Mr M' Naughten took place, for the assassination Mr Edward Drummond, secretary to Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Mr M' Naughten was fixated with Sir Robert Peel, and in his attempt to assassinate him he hit Drummond. The trial became notorious and is still cited today as he pleaded insanity and was therefore not tried. Date: 1848

Tilaks trial. Balgangadhar Tilak (1856-1920) - an outstanding fighter for the national liberation of India. He has published several scientific papers on the history of India. Deep patriotism and revolutionary temperament made Tilak primarily a political fighter. Repeated arrests did not break his resolve to fight until the colonialists were completely expelled.

The Mississippi Senate passes a resolution asking for federal military assistance after the White League attack on Vicksburg, winter 1874-75. Their alarm was caused by interracial violence that left 3 whites and 75 blacks dead, with accusations of corrupt color city officials, and alarm of an imminent black uprising. In fact, this was an attempted coup d'etat against the Republican led legislature by a local sheriff. Later in 1875, the Democrats carried out their 'Mississippi Plan', which used terror to suppress the Republican and black vote. Republican Governor, Adelbert Ames, held on until his forced resignation in March 29, 1876 (BSLOC_2019_6_16)

Several documents known as the 'Treaty of Tien-tsin' were signed in Tianjin (Tientsin) in June 1858, ending the first part of the Second Opium War (1856-1860). The Second French Empire, United Kingdom, Russian Empire, and the United States were the parties involved. These treaties opened more Chinese ports (see Treaty of Nanking) to the foreigners, permitted foreign legations in the Chinese capital Beijing, allowed Christian missionary activity, and legalized the import of opium. They were ratified by the Emperor of China in the Convention of Peking in 1860, after the end of the war.
