A Female Musician Charms an Antelope ca. 1825 Western India, Rajasthan, Kota The rugged, inhospitable terrain of Rajasthan, a favorite setting for Kota court artists, provides an unlikely context for a dalliance with the god Krishna. A prominent hunting towerbuilt to facilitate the shooting of animals driven into range by beatersoverlooks the sparsely wooded landscape. In the foreground, a female musician sits before the tower playing a sitar, while a mrig (a type of musk deer) stands before her, transfixed by the music. From the turret of the tower, Krishna gestures toward a leopard retreating over the horizon; another big cat climbs the hill.. A Female Musician Charms an Antelope 54184

Shigeru Aoki (1882-1911) was a Japanese painter famed for his combining of Japanese mythology and legends with the Western-style art movement that could be found in some late 19th and early 20th century Japanese paintings. Aoki was born into an ex-samurai household in northern Kyushu. He left his home in 1899 to pursue artistic studies in Tokyo, and soon began to accumulate critical acclaim for his artwork and its use of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood techniques mixed with Kojiki themes. He died in March 1911 from tuberculosis, aged only 28.

Page from a Naishadha-carita of Shri Harsha Series Indian. Page from a Naishadha-carita of Shri Harsha Series, ca. 1800-1825. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 11 5/8 x 15 5/8 in. (29.5 x 39.7 cm). The Naishadhacharita is an epic poem recounting the romance between the hero, Nala, and his wife, Damayanti. This page may depict episodes from the story after Nala has lost his kingdom and must serve as charioteer to King Rituparna. The king is shown seated on a horsedrawn cart with two attendants (both proportionally smaller than the king to show his importance) and wearing a crown (here a symbol of ancient royalty, as contemporary kings would have worn turbans). The purplecloaked figure of Nala appears three times, narrating consecutive episodes. This depiction of the passage of time on a single page is typical in Indian painting, but the use of a deep, open landscape setting is quite unusual. Asian Art ca. 1800-1825

Vali and Sugriva Fighting, Folio from the Dispersed 'Shangri Ramayana' Indian. Vali and Sugriva Fighting, Folio from the Dispersed 'Shangri Ramayana', ca. 1700-1710. Opaque watercolor on paper, sheet: 8 x 12 1/4 in. (20.3 x 31.1 cm). This painting is from a large series of illustrations narrating one of Hinduisms great epics, the Ramayana. Much of the story takes place in the wilderness, where the hero, Rama, has been exiled. While there, Rama befriends a monkey, Sugriva, who wishes to overthrow his own brother to become king of the monkeys. This painting shows the pivotal battle between Sugriva and his brother, Vali, with Rama (with blue skin) looking on. Sugriva will eventually win when Rama shoots Vali with an arrow. Paintings from this series are characterized by their lively figures, which are almost always set against single-color backdrops with minimal indication of location (here, a single tree). Khusraw Discovers Shirin Bathing, From Pictorial Cycle of Eight Poetic Subjects Khusraw Discovers Shirin Bathing, From Pictorial Cycle of Eight Poetic Subjects, mid 18th century. Oil on canvas, 36 x 35 in. (91.4 x 88.9 cm). This image captures the culminating moment in the passionate love affair between Irans legendary King Khusraw II (Sasanian dynasty, r. 590-628) and Shirin, an Armenian princess. After days of longing, Khusraw coincidentally encounters Shirin for the first time as she bathes in a pond. Entranced by each others beauty, the lovers remain speechless. Although rooted in oral tradition, the tale of Khusraw and Shirin found its greatest expression as one of the five narrative poems of the Khamsa (Quintet), composed by the celebrated Nizami of Ganja (1141-1209), one of Irans greatest masters of romantic poetry. Sohni Swims to Meet her Lover Mahinwal Indian. Sohni Swims to Meet her Lover Mahinwal, ca. 1775-1780. Opaque watercolor on paper, sheet: 10 5/8 x 15 1/8 in. (27.0 x 38.4 cm). This painting illustrates a well-known Punjabi folk tale about a forbidden love affair that ended in tragedy. The lovely Sohni fell in love with a young man who lived across the river from her familys land. She could not swim, so she used a pot to float across the deep river to meet him each night. When Sohnis disapproving family discovered the affair, her sister-in-law replaced the pot with one made of unbaked clay. It disintegrated, and Sohni drowned. This painting shows Sohni during one of her successful crossings, with her lover, Mahinwal, waiting for her on the other side and sleeping figures in the foreground. The gloom of night has been created with a dark palette and thin layers of gray paint. Sohni and Mahinwal, however, appear to glow against the dark setting, an effect that highlights their passion a

Krishna and Radha Krishna and Radha, late 19th-early 20th century. Watercolors on paper with polished tin accents, 16 x 10 1/2 in. (40.6 x 26.7 cm). This watercolor image is called a Kalighat painting, produced quickly and in multiples for sale in the markets around the Kali temple in Kolkata at the turn of the twentieth century. Common features of Kalighat paintings are the loose application of shading around the arms, legs, and faces of the figures and the rudimentary curtain at the top to suggest a stage or altar setting. Indian modernist artists of the early twentieth century would cite Kalighat paintings as a source of inspiration, noting that their Indian predecessors were abstracting the human form even before European painters. Lakshmi 1894 India Lakshmi standing on a lotus is perhaps the most well-known example of all of the early lithographs of Hindu gods. In part this is because of Ravi Varmas fame and the fact that he produced such high quality images, but it is also a result of its long print run; much simplified versions of this print continued to be produced into the 1920s. Ravi Varma based this print on a series of oil painting he did for various patrons; one of these is currently on display in the Maharaja Fatesingh Museum, Vadodara. The painterly quality of the print attests to its origins as an oil painting, a medium that essentially comes into fashion in the late 19th century with Ravi Varma being one of its most successful exponents. According to Mark Barron this print can be dated to 1894, the first year of Ravi Varma Press. He bases this on the stippling technique that uses the edge of a brush, the oversized format (larger than the standard 28 x 20 in. Ravi Varma Press prints), the uneven text
