Smoke Billows From Pier Blaze -- A huge pall of smoke rises from pier 57, occupied by the Grace Line, Hudson River and 15th Street, New York City, Sept. 29 as fire estimated as causing $5,000,000 damage is brought under control. The fire started under the pier (upper left) and spread through the building (lower left) connecting Piers 57 and 58 (right) where a liner had been berthed. The Liner was towed out into the river. Children Cheer Fireman -- Schoolchildren released from their classes loudly cheered 26 firemen as they fought a fierce, spectacular fire (see above) which swept through a glove-leather tanning factory in Boundary Road, North Melbourne, at 10.30 a.m. today. In less than half an hour the fire almost destroyed several brick and timber buildings owned by T. G. Cooper. and raced dangerously close to other factories before it was checked. The main brick building of the tannery was burned out, and several two-storeyed timber annexes were destroyed, also thousands of lamb, sheep and calf skins. December 13, 1950.

French Port Devastated By Explosion -- Fires raging along the quayside after the explosion in Brest Harbour.At least 20 people were killed and many hundreds injured when a Norwegian ship - the "Ocean Liberty" carrying a cargo of nitrate of ammonia, blew up after catching fire in Brest harbour.Fire were caused in the town and large areas of the port - recently rebuilt after war damage - were again devastated by the force of the explosion.
