The room is designed with a geometric plasterwork ceiling which echoes the geometric parquet floor. A sip-branched gilt and patinated bronze chandelier is suspended from a central rosette. The room is sparsely decorated with Rococo Revival chairs with Victorian-influenced fringe and antimacassars. Plant stands and groupings of small portraits and engravings ? are typical of mid-nineteenth century interiors. The heavy marble chimneypiece, a candelabra, an overmantle mirror, and a gilt-bronze clock under a glass dome are extravagant elements in an otherwise bourgeois setting. Date: 1850s. This view depicts the Salon of the Polish nobleman, Count Lanckoronski, who is seated in chair, reading. The walls are hung with paintings by Gainsborough, van Ruisdael, Waldmüller, and Claude. A collection of antique sculpture, bronzes, glass and porcelain decorates the room. A Persian carpet covers the floor. This is a typical salon of mid-nineteenth century France, possibly in Paris. The walls are hung with dark green striped paper and the floor covered with a carpet of Rococo Revival floral design. Red draperies are hung from gilt-bronze poles. The cabinet-on-stand, chairs, and candelabra are decorated with gilt-bronze elements in the Empire style. Large porcelain vases, probably Chinese, flank the candelabra. A large crystal chandelier hangs over a cloth-covered table. A kneehole desk with a green leather ? top is most probably English. Ancestor portraits and an antique statue placed on a pedestal table complete the salon of a royal or aristocratic owner. Brush and watercolor, gouache, graphite on white wove paper. Date: 1850-60. This view, dominated by horse paintings, indicates a room belonging to a sportsman or racing enthusiast. However, the use of matching blue-and-white upholstery fabric on the Rococo Revival furniture and in the window swags is not especially masculine. On the left, a trellis screen appears to enclose tall potted plants. Both the slant desk and flattop desk are inspirations of the Biedermeier period. Date: 1856. On dressing table at rear center, a porcelain pitcher and basin sit in front of a silver mirror in rococo-revival style, flanked by candelabra.
