A railway accident at Abbots Ripton, Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire) on the Great Northern Railway. Shown here is the raising of a locomotive from the wreckage. The accident happened when the Flying Scotsman express train from Edinburgh to London was involved in a double collision, during a blizzard, with a coal train and another passenger train. The Last of the Coaches'. The Royal Mail coach service, begun in the 1780s, flourished until the coming of the railways in 1830. It was not long before mail was being carried by the cheaper and faster railway and the coaches were phased out.
