This Hanson Cab in the Shelburne Museum dates to c 1895. It is made of polychrome wood, iron, glass, patent leather, and rubber. This vehicle was named after the English architect Joseph A. Hansom, who patented the original design in 1834. The Hansom cab was the first taxi cab or carriage for hire in English cities and became known as the gondola of London. Later in the 19th century, it became popular in the United States. This one was built by Hinks & Johnson in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Thus Conestoga Wagon (in the Shelburne Museum) was built for McGraham White of Chester County, Pennsylvania, who used it to haul grain over the 60 miles from Lancaster to Philadelphia. Built c. 1837 by wagon maker A Griffin and blacksmith/wheelwright Peter Criley, it is one of the few remaining authentic Conestoga wagons in existence. Conestoga wagons had curved bottoms, which kept heavy loads centered and prevented them from shifting on rough roads.
