Gold Mining In Fiji -- Portion of small hospital for Fijians showing the maternity ward with Matiyo Medical Practitioner and Fijian nurse.Gold mining, the Colony's second largest industry, was begun in 1935. The two principal companies operating are The Emperor and The Loloma. Fijians provide 75% of the labour on the goldfield and many of them have become skilled mineworkers. Special attention has been paid by the mining companies to the welfare of their employees. Living accommodation of a high standard has been provided, extensive playing fields laid out and community halls have been built. The industry suffered a temporary setback owing to labour and equipment shortage during the latter part of the war. The peak year of production being 1941 when a yield of 119,000 ozs. was obtained. Guy's Hospital- Life in a London Hospital, England, 1941 A nurse gives a drink of milk to a young girl before she is evacuated to a base hospital in the country. The nurse, the girl, her mother and an elderly lady sit around the fireplace: the only reminder that they are in Guy's Hospital are the two curtained cubicles in the far corner, where a second nurse attends to a patient.

Glass Case Filled With Oxygen Newest Medical Device. A sealed glass room has been installed at Guy's. London's most famous old hospital, for the treatment of patients with oxygen. The room is kept filled with air containing double the amount of oxygen present in normal atmosphere. Special arrangements also providing for absolute purity of the air within the 'show case'. Note lock on door to prevent accidental opening and contamination.

There are different types of nurses at work at Guy's, including VADs (Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses) and those from the Red Cross.

They offer him a newspaper to read and chocolate to munch on. This act of kindness eases the soldier's pain and is part of the Red Cross's work.

American Red Cross Service Club, Norwich- Life at the Club at the Bishop's Palace, Norfolk, England, UK, 1943 American servicemen settle down for the night on the bunks provided for them at the American Red Cross Service Club in Norwich. The room in which the men sleep was previously the Bishop's private chapel, usable as a dormitory as it was unconsecrated. The bunks are stamped with the 'broad arrow' mark, indicating that they have been provided by the British government (the marks are not visible in the photograph). According to the original caption: 'Clean sheets and pillow cases are provided every night. A bed down costs eighteen pence. Chapel contains the grave of Elizabeth, daughter of a former Bishop, but no ghost walks'.
