For nineteenth-century Americans, who understood the American landscape to be unmarked by traces of past civilizations, the ancient ruins of Europe were objects of fascination and contemplation. With the American tourist in mind, John Linton Chapman produced numerous versions of this painting of the Via Appia, the ancient roadway outside Rome that is lined with the ruins of tombs. Chapman describes the scene in precise detail, thus competing with popular photographic views of the site. American Art 1869

Ruined Castle 1802-42 Copy after John Sell Cotman British Areas of crude handling, and lack of finesse in forms and shadows, suggest that this drawing was made by a student copying a Cotman original. The master had returned to his home town of Norwich to run a school between 1823 and 1833, then moved back to London in 1834 to become drawing master at King's College School, retaining that position for the rest of his life. A City on a Rock Style of Goya Spanish When A City on a Rock was purchased in Spain in the mid-1880s by an American collector, it was attributed to Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). The painting is now thought to be by one of Goya's followers and may have been painted as late as 1850-75. The artist has studied Goya's technique, and has produced a painting sufficiently close to his style that it was accepted by most authorities until about 1970. The Mission Charles W. Hawthorne (American, 1872-1930). The Mission, 1928. Transparent watercolor with touches of opaque watercolor over black conte crayon on beige, thick, moderate-rough textured wove paper, 13 3/8 x 19 7/16 in. (34 x 49.4 cm). In this striking image of a mission church that Charles Hawthorne encountered on a trip to Texas and Mexico in 1928, he used watery washes to suggest a scene bathed in brilliant southwestern light. The vivid tonalities and rapid touch of Hawthornes mature work in watercolor (largely from the 1920s) stand in stark contrast to the oil paintings for which he was better known—figure subjects that tended to be dark and heavily brushed. He may have found inspiration for this more liberated expression in the freely brushed and vibrant watercolors of John Singer Sargent. American Art 1928
