Ceiling in Hadrian's Villa, near Tivoli, Luigi Rossini, Italian, 1790 - 1857, Pen and black ink, brush and watercolor, gold paint, black chalk on paper, Design of a ceiling. It is supported at four corners by bucrania and in the middle of the curved sides by winged female half-figures, who are on top of an arch which is supported by two satyr gaines. In the center of the cupola is a panel with a sphere supported by four children. A few grotesque motifs are in the remaining panels. From the bucrania hang festoons, the other ends of which are held by women who stand near the geines. Below the bucrania are sitting figures of gods; shown are Zeus and Ares. Kanō Naizen (野内膳, 1570 - 1616) was a Japanese painter of the Kanō school, particularly known for his screen paintings (byōbu) of Namban (Southern Barbarians, i.e. Europeans). The Nanban trade (南蛮貿易 Nanban bōeki, 'Southern barbarian trade') or the Nanban trade period (南蛮貿易時代 Nanban bōeki jidai, 'Southern barbarian trade period') in Japanese history extends from the arrival of the first Europeans - Portuguese explorers, missionaries and merchants - to Japan in 1543, to their near-total exclusion from the archipelago in 1614, under the promulgation of the 'Sakoku' Seclusion Edicts.

Les monuments d'Égypte ca. 1808 Oberkampf Manufactory French This type of monochromatic pictorial cotton, toile de Jouy, takes its name from the village near Versailles where the first printed textile factory in France was founded. Started by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf (1738-1815), who had been brought up in the textile industry, the factory began work in 1760. Located in Jouy-en-Josas near the court, it attracted an affluent clientele that appreciated the quality of Oberkampf's fabrics.Printed multicolored patterns on cloth were achieved at first by use of carved wood blocks. By the 1770s, reproductions of finely drawn engravings of pictorial prints and floral and geometric patterns were made possible through copperplate and cylinder printing. Stencil with Pattern of Seascape on White Ground 19th century Japan Stencils like these were traditionally used in Japan in a resist-dyeing process to produce lengths of patterned cloth. A length of white cloth was stretched out and paste was applied through the stencil, which was then removed to the next area and the next until the entire length was covered. The cloth was then dyed, usually with indigo, and the areas covered with the paste resisted the dye. In both of these stencils, note that half of the pattern is upside down, resulting in a finished product in which either end can serve as the top.The ground is cut away in the smaller stencil, placing it in the category of stencils called jishiro, literally "white ground."
