Whaling in the Ross sea Nitrate negatives, black-and-white negatives

Images obtained by NASA's EPOXI mission spacecraft show an active end of the nucleus of comet Hartley 2. Icy particles spew from the surface. Most of these particles are traveling with the nucleus; fluffy 'snowballs' about 3 centimeters to 30 centimeters.

Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission, is photographed during thermovacuum training in Chamber B of the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory, Building 32, Manned Spacecraft Center. He is wearing an Extravehicular Mobility Unit. The training simulated lunar surface vacuum and thermal conditions during astronaut operations outside the Lunar Module on the moon's surface. The mirror was used to reflect solar light.

AS12-48-7034 (19 Nov. 1969) --- A close-up view of a portion of quadrant II of the descent stage of the Apollo 12 Lunar Module (LM), photographed during the Apollo 12 extravehicular activity (EVA). At lower left is the LM's Y footpad. The empty Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) fuel cask is at upper right. The fuel capsule has already been removed and placed in the RTG. The RTG furnishes power for the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) which the Apollo 12 astronauts deployed on the moon. The LM's descent engine skirt is in the center background. The rod-like object protruding out from under the footpad is a lunar surface sensing probe. Astronaut Richard F. Gordon Jr., command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit while astronauts Charles Conrad Jr., commander; and Alan L. Bean, lunar module pilot, descended in the LM to explore the moon.

NASA's Opportunity had driven 72.3 meters southward (237 feet) that sol. Engineers drove the rover backward as a strategy to counteract an increase in the amount of current drawn by the drive motor of the right-front wheel. This is a cylindric projection.

Pinwheel Crater at Night

S66-45328 (19 July 1966) --- Ultraviolet spectra of stars in the Carina-Vela region of the southern Milky Way. These objective-grating spectra were obtained by astronauts John W. Young and Michael Collins during Gemini-10 stand-up EVA on July 19, 1966, with a 70mm Maurer camera and its f/3.3 focal length lens. The spectra extends from 2,200 angstroms to about 4,000 angstroms. The spacecraft was docked to the horizon-stabilized Agena-10; thus giving an apparent field of rotation resulting from the four-degree-per-minute orbital motion during the 20-second exposure time.

Variations in the appearance of the giant plume from the Tvashtar volcano on Jupiter's moon Io are seen in this composite of the best photos taken by the New Horizons Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) during its Jupiter flyby in late February.

Thanks to the illumination angle, Mimas (right) and Dione (left) appear to be staring up at a giant Saturn looming in the background as captured in this image by NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

ISS016-E-027216 (4 Feb. 2008) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space, an unpiloted Progress 27 supply vehicle departs from the Pirs Docking Compartment of the International Space Station on Feb. 4, 2008, carrying its load of trash and unneeded equipment to be deorbited and burned up in Earth's atmosphere. The undocking clears the way for the arrival of a new Progress 28, planned to launch Feb. 5 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and dock with the station on Feb. 7.

S74-15696 (1974) --- The solar disk photographed through the Skylab S082 Ultraviolet Spectrograph/Heliograph can be seen in this reproduction taken from a television tranmission made by a TV camera aboard the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. The S082 experiment is located in the Apollo Telescope Mount. This spectroheliogram shows specific emission features greatly enhanced over photographs of the solar disk in white light.
