London's New Fire Float -- The "Massy Shaw". One of the largest firefighting ships, undergoing pumping trials at Whit's yard, Cowes, Isle of wight.The float was built by J. Samuel White & Co., Ltd. of Cowes, for the London county council to be used on the river Thames.She is 78ft. long by 13ft. 6in. extreme breadth a draught of 3ft. 9in., and a speed of 12knots. Driven by two diesel engines, she can pass under any of the Thames bridge at highest of times. There are night jets capable of throwing 5,000 gallons of water per minute, and a monitor with a 3½ inch jet throwing 4,800 gallons of water to a height of 250 feet.The "Massy Shaw", London's new firstfloat, undergoing tests at Cowes, using all her jets.
