The Royal Navy during the Second World War The stern half of HMS PORCUPINE being towed into Portsmouth by the tug SWARTHY after the ship had been split in two by a torpedo in the Medterranean. The major portion of the ship eventually filled the role of Headquarters HQ ship of Landing Craft Command at Portsmouth.

Last Minutes Of Luxury Liner - Lifeboats pull away from the sinking, fog-shrouded Argentinian liner Maipu (11,500-tons) as she lists heavily to port after being in collision with the United States transport General Hersey off the German Coast.The collision occurred during dense fog. Nine Killed, 59 Injured As Tanker Explodes -- The tanker half under water as a fireboat keeps down the flames in the forepart of the vessel.The 10,000-ton Italian oil tanker Montallegro exploded in Naples Harbour March 16, killing nine and injuring 59. The Mid-day blast shook the whole waterfront, split the vessel in two, and caused heavy damage within a 100-yard radius along the wharf to which the ship had put in for repairs. March 18, 1951. Britain's first motor torpedo boat Flotilla en route for the Mediterranean. June 1987. Designed by Hubert Scott-Paine, the holder of the world's salt water record. They were built by the British power boat Company, Hythe, Southampton, and are the only motor Torpedo boats in the British navy service overseas. April 19, 1938.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A special crane drops a newly-repaired MGB 58 back into the water at Felixstowe. A shore based staff of engine room artificers and shipwrights at Felixstowe kept the speedy craft of Britain's light coastal forces in top condition.

New Power Boats for the R.A.F.The new boats travelling down Southampton Waters as they left Hythe today.A contract for 32 boats has been placed by the Air Ministry with the British Power Boat Co., of Hythe, Southampton. Several of the boats which have already been completed, were handed over the R.A.F. today.The boats are 37½ft. Long, are fitted with two "Power ***** 100 H.P. engines, and a speed of 24 knots with full load.They have a range of 130 nautical miles at full speed. April 11, 1938. (Photo by Keystone).

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A Fairmile Motor Launch arrives at Port Said, with ML 1126 is moored nearby. The motor launch was built by the Anglo-American Nile Transport Co. in their Shubra Yard, Cairo. Following the launch and commisioning, the boat was taken in tow from Cairo to Port Said by way of the Ishmailia Canal, a journey of three days. At the end of the Ishmailia Canal the boats entered Lake Timsah and proceeded via the Suez Canal to Port Said for fitting out.

Dog's-Eye View of An Important Australian Event -- Between December and March each year, at the height of the brief Antarctic summer, the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition relief ship Kista Dan visits all three of Australia's Atarctic research stations on Macquarie and Heard Islands and at Mawson, on the Antarctic mainland. On February 9 this year she pulled into the tiny harbour at Mawson. During the next three weeks she offload 450 tons of stores, and the men of the old and new parties completed an extensive building programme which more than doubled the number of buildings on the station.One of the amphibious Dukw's which accompanied the 1955 expedition to Mawson clambering ashore on the rocky slopes of the harbour.
