It is probable that there are worse waterways in the world, but, if so, they are little frequented by ships. To navigate the sip on this water one man must always be aboard. That man is the pilot.The Bristol Pilots are an ancient body. It is not known when first they went forth the bring in the ships, but it must have been many centuries ago.Today the pilots are a Limited Company owning their two steam and two motor cutters. Modern Vikings Row Up The Thames - The Viking ship Hugin being rowed upstream, with Tower Bridge in the background.The Viking ship 'Hugin', which was sailed across the North Sea from Denmark to commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the landing in Britain of Hengist and Horsa, to-day (Monday) was rowed by its crew of young Danes up the Thames from Tower Bridge to Richmond (Surrey), where a civic reception had been arranged for the modern Vikings. As the longship passed Lambeth, a boatload of 'Ancient Britons - doctors and students from St. Thomas's Hospital - attempted an attack with flour 'bombs', but were intercepted by river police.
