The First Cunard Liner -- An Interesting picture, in view of the launching of the giant new Cunarder by the Queen on Wednesday. The Ship shown here is the first Cunard liner, "Britannia", which made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic from Liverpool to New York in 1840, completing the trip in 14 8 hours. - It is expected that the new Cunarder will also be named "Britannia." The Fredensborg was a frigate built in Copenhagen in 1752 or 1753. She was named Cron Prindz Christian after the prince who was to become king Christian VII of Denmark and Norway, and was fitted out as a slave ship. After an unsuccessful stint in the triangular trade, her operational area was limited to the Caribbean, where she sailed as a trader until 1756. The ship was then purchased by another Danish company and renamed Fredensborg after one of the Danish-Norwegian trading stations on the African Gold Coast. On December 1, 1768 Fredensborg sank in a storm off Tromøy in Arendal, Norway. The wreck was discovered by divers in September 1974.

The French ironclad Rochambeau, formerly the American Dunderberg, 1868. Ship '...purchased by the French Government from the United States...She is a very formidable vessel of war...and may be described as a shotproof iron fort, mounted upon an iron hull, with fore and aft decks, likewise of iron, which are but little raised above the water-level. 'Cutty Sark' At Festival Berth -- She flaunts no sails, but the beauty of the speedy old tea clipper 'Cutty Sark' is still there as she finds her moorings off Rotherhithe, London, in readiness for the Festival of the Britain, whose history she helped make.She will be on view to visitors during the festival.'Cutty Sark' was laid at Falmouth for 16 years until she was towed to be Thames in ***** Nautical Training college. The British conquest of Burma began in 1824 in response to a Burmese attempt to invade India. By 1886, and after two further wars, Britain had incorporated the entire country into the British Raj. To stimulate trade and facilitate changes, the British brought in Indians and Chinese, who quickly displaced the Burmese in urban areas. To this day Rangoon and Mandalay have large ethnic Indian populations. Railways and schools were built, as well as a large number of prisons, including the infamous Insein Prison, then as now used for political prisoners. Burmese resentment was strong and was vented in violent riots that paralysed Rangoon on occasion all the way until the 1930s. Burma was administered as a province of British India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony. Burma finally gained independence from Britain on January 4, 1948.
