This work and the closely related Sacrifice to Cupid have been attributed to the Mantuan medalist Cristoforo di Geremia, who was active in Rome. Originally both plaquettes were often combined with allantica oil lamps, and in the antiquarian literature were confused with authentic Roman bronze lamps. The inscription .L.C.I. has been interpreted as “Lucerna Continui Ignis” (the eternally burning lamp), following a seventeenth-century interpretation by Fortunius Licetus, who related this type of plaquette and its accompanying lamp to legendary ancient Roman lamps that were found burning after 1,500 years or more. The Lehman plaquette appears to be an old aftercast with some loss of detail, possibly dating from the sixteenthMirror 12th century The casting technique for this mirror, known as sand casting, was introduced to Iran from China around the mid-eleventh century. The form, with a prominent central knob from which it could be hung, is also inspired by Chinese models. However, the decoration with an inscription bearing good wishes in Arabic, a ring of running animals, and a scrolling vegetal design is drawn from the repertoire of Iran during the time of the Seljuqs.. In order to communicate with the outside world, new postal technologies were devised, including the use of homing pigeons to carry messages in micro-film to and from the capital city. This struck copper medal was awarded to civilian pigeon-keepers ("colombiers civils") by the French Ministry of War. It was designed by Eugène Oudiné, one of the most accomplished and prolific medallists of the nineteenth-century, and who is perhaps best known for his winning 1848 design for a new five-franc coin..
