Dr. James H. Nakano who directed the Smallpox Laboratory (completed in 1967), which later became one of the world's leading reference centers. His laboratory work on smallpox was instrumental in delineating the strengths and weaknesses of various laboratory diagnostic methods, demonstrating that no reservoir of smallpox could be maintained in wild animals. Douthwaite leaving his London home for Guy's Hospital.Dr. A.H. Douthewaite, 40-year-old physician at Guy's Hospital, London, and Dr. F.A. Knott, a pathologist, reader at London University and director of the bacteriological department at Guy's, are entering the final stage of their search for an influenza cure. The experiment, curing which tests will be maoe on men and women, is likely to be one of the greatest of the century. Dr. Douthwaite and Dr. Knott intend to make serum from blood specimens, some of which have been taken from people convalescing after influenza. They will test the serum first on animals, then on themselves and, if these tests are successful, on men and women. January 16, 1937.
