Ocean Springs, MS, May 18, 2015 - Explanatory signage and marker at Fort Maureas Park, Ocean Springs, Mississippi. perfected in 1699 under the direction of French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Ibperville, Fort Maureas became the capital of Louisiana (New France) before the capital was moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1722. Fort Maureas was abandoned in 1702 and was eventually destroyed by fire in 1719. A replica of the original wooden fort was constructed at the original site in Ocean Springs in 1981, but Hurricane Katrina destroyed the replica in 2005. The site of the original Fort Maureas has been restored as a ark (including a playground, stage and pavilion) with Public Assistance from FEMA.

Jackson, Mississippi, Mug shots of Freedom Riders, who were arrested in 1961 in Jackson for trying to integrate interstate bus transportation. The mug shots are on display at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, together with a cell from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, where many were incarcerated. The museum focuses on the movement which upended politics and race relations in the state between 1945 and 1970.

Gulfport City Hall was severely damaged by the winds and storm surge of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
