Invasion Balloons Protect Salerno Beaches -- R.A.F. Balloon Barrage men were among the first Allied troops to land on the beaches at Salerno. Their job was to keep low flying enemy aircraft from bombing and strafing. The landing barges as they came in shore. One detachment landed with their balloons in the gulf of Salerno before Daylight on invasion day. They waded ashore through three fit of water carrying their balloons and planted them on the beach in the face of heavy machine-gun and mortar fire. December 13, 1943. Afghanistan: 'The Aftermath of the Battle of Ali Masjid - 19 Members of the Yorkshire Infantry', photograph by John Burke (1843-1900), 1878. The Second Anglo-Afghan War was waged between the British Raj and the Emirate of Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880. A consequence of the Great Game between Britain and Russia, the conflict was instigated by the latter sending an uninvited diplomatic mission to Kabul, despite the wishes and protestations of Sher Ali Khan, the Amir of Afghanistan. When a British demand for their own diplomatic mission was refused, the Second Anglo-Afghan War commenced.

China Burma India Theater (CBI) was the name used by the United States Army for its forces operating in conjunction with British and Chinese Allied air and land forces in China, Burma, and India during World War II. Well-known US units in this theater included the Flying Tigers, transport and bomber units flying the Hump, the 1st Air Commando Group, the engineers who built Ledo Road, and the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), otherwise known as Merrill's Marauders.

Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

Blood Plasma Cuts the Toll at Saipan. Felled by Jap fire in the invasion of Saipan, a wounded Marine receives an injection of blood plasma at a beach first aid station as fellow Marines and Coast Guardsmen the tense drama of a "fight for life"behind the lines. Blood plasma, again at Saipan, reduced the toll of lives lost in the forces of American Marines, soldiers, sailors, and Coast Guardsmen.
