THE AFGHAN WAR

Cetshwayo (Cetshwayo kaMpande) (c. 1826-1884). King of the Zulus (1872-1879). Restoration of King Cetewayo. Return of the king to his former territories after his captivity in England, following his capture by the British at the Battle of Ulundi (July 4, 1879), and his subsequent exile to Cape Town. In July 1882, Cetewayo was authorized to travel to the United Kingdom to seek support from British politicians for the restoration of the Zulu monarchy. Queen Victoria allowed him to return to Ulundi in January 1883, to rule a part of his former kingdom, without being able to have an army and with the obligation to cede part of his territory to another Zulu. The day after the installation of Cetewayo in Intonyanene, about fifteen miles from Ulundi, numerous deputations of the interior of the kingdom appeared in the camp, for the accomplishment of the ceremony that the natives called Indaba. The 1890 caption reads: "Address to rebel officers at Kavalli." It is from H M Stanleys book, In Darkest Africa. Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) was a British explorer and journalist. In 1871, the New York Herald sent him to Africa to find David Livingstone. On the expedition of 1879-1884, he obtained territorial concessions that led to Belgian acquisition of Congo Free State.

William Grant Stairs (1863-1892) was a Canadian-British explorer, who took part in the European colonization of Africa. He was appointed to the Emin Pasha Relief expedition, headed by Henry Morton Stanley. During this expedition, he was seriously wounded by a poisoned arrow. He did recover.

The Second Anglo-Afghan War was fought between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880, when the nation was ruled by Sher Ali Khan of the Barakzai dynasty, the son of former Emir Dost Mohammad Khan. This was the second time British India invaded Afghanistan. The war ended in a manner after attaining all the British geopolitical objectives. Most of the British and Indian soldiers withdrew from Afghanistan. The Afghans were permitted to maintain internal sovereignty but they had to cede control of their nation's foreign relations to the British.

The British 1868 Expedition to Abyssinia was a punitive expedition carried out by armed forces of the British Empire against the Ethiopian Empire. Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia, also known as 'Theodore', imprisoned several missionaries and two representatives of the British government. The punitive expedition launched by the British in response required the transportation of a sizable military force hundreds of miles across mountainous terrain lacking any road system. The force consisted of 13,000 British and Indian soldiers, 26,000 camp followers and over 40,000 animals, including elephants. It set sail from Bombay in upwards of 280 steam and sailing ships. The advance guard of engineers landed at Zula on the Red Sea, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Massawa. The decisive battle took place at the mountain fortress of Magdala on April 10-11, 1868. The Atlantic slave trade or transatlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries. The vast majority of those enslaved that were transported to the New World, many on the triangular trade route and its Middle Passage, were West Africans from the central and western parts of the continent sold by western Africans to western European slave traders, or by direct European capture to the Americas. The numbers were so great that Africans who came by way of the slave trade became the most numerous Old World immigrants in both North and South America before the late 18th century. Far more slaves were taken to South America than to the north. The South Atlantic economic system centered on producing commodity crops, and making goods and clothing to sell in Europe, and increasing the numbers of African slaves brought to the New World.
