The Army of the Potomac 1863 Drawn and published by John Badger Bachelder American This lithograph details the Union armys supply wagons and soldiers retreating down the Virginia Peninsula during the Seven Days Fight, a series of battles fought between June 25 and July 1, 1862. Once Major General George McClellans attempt to take the Confederate capital of Richmond had failed, his army was forced back to the James River. Bachelder, a New England artist, here emphasizes the scale of the Union forces with long lines of horse-drawn wagons and infantry platoons waiting to ford Bear Creek. A steep fissured bank challenges the descending wagons, several of which have foundered. At left and right drummers wade across the stream and fusiliers pull cannons up the bank. In the foreground, infantrymen rest around a campfire near two cavalrymen who survey the scene. Copying Maps, Photographic Headquarters, Petersburg, Virginia March 1865 Unknown Alexander Gardner, George N. Barnard, and numerous other Civil War photographers duplicated maps and important military documents using a copy camera set up like the one shown in this view. Leaning against the log cabin are a pair of contact printing frames tilted toward the sun. For large and small campaigns and even minor exploratory forages, officers in the North and the South needed accurate regional maps, which were in short supply at wars start. Since hand-tracing or engraving existing maps proved too time consuming, army topographic engineers hired photographers to copy and print maps and other important documents in the field..
