Still smiling although wounded by gunfire from a German submarine, Coast Guardsman Louis Russell, seaman second class, of 499 Riverdale, Brooklyn, N.Y., waits on the bridge of a Coast Guard combat cutter for removal to sick bay. He completely recovered. In the mid-Atlantic action, the U-Boat was blasted to the bottom with depth charges.

Robert James Flynn (1937 - 2014) Naval Flight Officer, United States Navy. captured by the Chinese in August 1967 after the A-6 Intruder he was flying in on a mission over North Vietnam was shot down. Flynn and his pilot, along with another A-6 Intruder crew, were evading North Vietnamese jets following their mission over Hanoi when they strayed over the border into Chinese air space. Downed just over the Chinese border, Flynn was apprehended by the Chinese and held in China as a Prisoner of War where he was tortured and held almost exclusively in solitary confinement for five and a half years.

The Captain's steward, he is Andres Pangilinan, Steward's Mate First Class. He was born in San Rogue, Cavite, the Philippines and enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1929.

The Second Sino-Japanese War (July 7, 1937 - September 2, 1945), called so after the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95, was a military conflict fought primarily between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan from 1937 to 1941. China fought Japan with some economic help from Germany (until 1941), the Soviet Union (1937-1940) and the United States. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the war merged into the greater conflict of World War II as a major front of what is broadly known as the Pacific War. The Second Sino-Japanese War was the largest Asian war in the 20th century. It also made up more than 50% of the casualties in the Pacific War if the 1937-1941 period is taken into account.

He Made the Big Shot. Coast Guard Combat Photographer S. Scott Wigle, former Detroit (Mich.) newspaperman, made the "first" shot of the D-Day invasion of the coast of France. Wigle photographed two files of troop-packed LCIs headed across the English Channel and scored a "beat" when he maneuvered the negative back to London for transmission to the United States. The picture hit the front pages of newspapers from coast to coast, while first reports of the Normandy landings were sifting back across the Atlantic. Wigle's camera was knocked down for $8,500,000 in War Bonds in the Coast-to-coast Victory Auction broadcast over the Mutual network.

The New SPAR Cap - It's Cap-tivating. Attractive SPAR Elizabeth Hall, 22, of Rochester, N.Y. models the new SPAR garrison cap, now optional gear for the Coast Guard Women's Reserve. The "overseas" style millinery is proving popular with SPARs, a large number of whom quickly changed over from the official brim-type hat. SPAR Hall, Seaman Second Class, enlisted in September, 1944, took her boot training at Palm Beach Training Station and now is on duty at headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Coast Guardsman Michael Telep, seaman first class, examines the bullet which struck him the neck during a Jap attack on a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport immediately preceding the assault on the Lingayan Gulf beaches of Luzon. This souvenir of Luzon was "delivered" to Telep from enemy planes swooping low to strafe his ship. Coast Guardsman Telep is the son of Joseph H. Telep of Homarville, Near Pittsburgh, PA.
