Adolf Hitler in conversation with German air force fighter ace Adolf Galland, 1941. Prior to the Second World War Galland (1912-1996) served with the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War. By the end of 1941, and after 94 victories, he was chosen by Hermann Goring to command Germany's fighter forces. He is pictured here in January 1941 with Hitler during a visit by the Fuhrer to the front when Galland was commander of the 26th Fighter Wing. The photographer is unknown.

This is a picture of Nuon Chea, 'Brother No 2' and Pol Pot's closest confidant, during the Democratic Kampuchea resistance to the Vietnamese installed government, probably around 1992, when the Khmer Rouge regime was still recognised by the United Nations. The Khmer Rouge, or Communist Party of Kampuchea, ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, led by Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen and Khieu Samphan. It is remembered primarily for its brutality and policy of social engineering which resulted in millions of deaths. Its attempts at agricultural reform led to widespread famine, while its insistence on absolute self-sufficiency, even in the supply of medicine, led to the deaths of thousands from treatable diseases (such as malaria). Brutal and arbitrary executions and torture carried out by its cadres against perceived subversive elements, or during purges of its own ranks between 1976 and 1978, are considered to have constituted a genocide. Wing Commander Derek Cumming (centre) landed his RAAF Canberra jet at Laverton from Cocos at 6.59 a.m. today. A little later he and his crew - Squadron Leader Colin Harvey, navigator (left) and Flying Officer Bob Atkinson co-pilot (right), took time off to catch up with the news. At 9.19 a.m. the Canberra took off for Christchurch - to finish its air-race flight interrupted by a burst tyre at Cocos. The tyre burst, said Wing Commander Cuming, was "a 1000-to-One chance which cost us the London-to-Christchurch race." At that stage they had a lead of 15 minutes over their nearest rival. Peng Dehuai (Peng Te-huai; simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Péng Déhuái; Wade-Giles: P'eng2 Te2-huai2) (October 24, 1898 - November 29, 1974) was a prominent Chinese Communist military leader, and served as China's Defense Minister from 1954 to 1959. Peng was born into a poor peasant family, and received several years of primary education before his family's poverty forced him to suspend his education at the age of ten, and to work for several years as a manual laborer. When he was sixteen, Peng became a professional soldier. Peng participated in the Northern Expedition, and supported Wang Jingwei's attempt to form a left-leaning Kuomintang government based in Wuhan. After Wang was defeated, Peng briefly rejoined Chiang Kai-shek's forces before joining the Chinese Communist Party, allying himself with Mao Zedong and Zhu De. Peng was one of the few senior military leaders who supported Mao's suggestions to involve China directly in the 1950-1953 Korean War, and
