The Royal Navy during the Second World War A proud souvenir, the torn Battle Ensign of HMS TARTAR carried in her action with German destroyers in the Channel. It was in this action 8 June 1944 at Barfleur that a German destroyer (ZH 1) was torpedoed and sunk by the destroyers TARTAR and ASHANTI and the former was hit on the bridge by three 120 mm shells. Left to right: Able Seamen E G Nurse of Swansea; W Wetherall of Chiswick; D J Harvey of Worcester; G Lilley of Rockhampton and P Gill of Manchester. They have all served over three years in TARTAR.

"Niagara" - Also Salvage Scenes - Merchant Shipping. March 01, 1955. On 19 June 1940 she was under the command of Captain William Martin and had just left Auckland when, off Bream Head, Whangarei at 3.40 am, she struck a mine laid by the German auxiliary cruiser Orion and sank in 121 metres (70 fathoms) of water at 5.32 am. The mines were part of an extensive field of moored contact-type mines laid by the Orion on the night of 1314 June, and a further three mines were disposed of by minesweepers in the area. A secret and large consignment of gold from the Bank of England was in Niagara's strong room and went down with the ship. There were 295 boxes, each containing two ingots of gold (590 ingots total), valued at £2,500,000.[4 The gold was payment from the United Kingdom to the United States, which had not yet entered the war, for munitions supplies.The Claymore recovered 555 gold bars

Her task is to remove all traffic barriers in the city of Amsterdam as quickly as possible, including clearance work in the port. The work also exists by clearing up the gammoners in the streets, the gaps in the road surface, caused by wooden cubes, to close: flooded cellars empty, etc. A very special task is to lighten the lifting cranes to the Javakade, which were blown up by the Germans and deeply in the water a major obstacle to shipping.
