Ventura Bombers, sturdy and well-tested veterans of Navy patrol and attack duty in the North Pacific, stand here on an airfield at an advanced Aleutian air base awaiting call for another raid on the fortified Kurile Islands north of Tokyo. The famous Squadron "X" of the rugged Lockheed Venturas flew for nine months on the "Empire Express" run over the Kuriles without loss of a single plane to enemy fire. The attacks on Japanese defenses and shipping by Venturas armed with rockets, bombs, torpedoes, depth charges, and strafing bullets are made over a 1500-mile round trip router over water and through the world's most treacherous weather.
