Otto von Guericke (Magdeburg,1602-Hamburg,  1686). German physicist, engineer and natural philosopher who invented the first air pump and used it to study the phenomenon of vacuum. Otto von Guericke showing his experiment with an evacuated sphere being carried out at Magdeburg. 16 horses were not able to pull apart the two halves of an evacuated sphere, which were known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The 1912 caption reads: Hidden Terror of Seas The wonderful submarine vessel invented and commanded by Captain Nemo circled the man-o-war like a beast of prey about to attack its victim and playing with it before it strikes death-blow. Captain Nemo is a fictional character created by the French novelist Jules Verne. Nemo appears in two of Verne's science-fiction classics, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas and The Mysterious Island. He also makes a cameo appearance in a play on which Verne may have collaborated, Journey Through the Impossible.

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (February 16, 1834 - August 9, 1919), also written von Haeckel, was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, and the kingdom Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany.
