German Prisoners Board Transport for Shipment to U.S. German soldiers stand on the wharves of a French port of embarking waiting to board a troop transport for shipment to prison camps in the U.S. Allied armies in western Europe took 2,472,906 German prisoners between June 6, 1944, the day of the Normandy landings, and April 27, 1945. On April 1, 1945, German prisoners numbering 311,630 were in U.S. camps. The U.S. War Department adheres strickly to the Geneva Convention in its treatment of prisoners of war. June 4, 1945. The Nazi soldiers, captured in the Normandy offensive, picked up a good deal of nautical knowledge on their way to internment in the States aboard this Coast Guard-manned transport.

Callaway Heroes Await Burial at Sea. Callaway Heroes Await Burial at Sea. Coast Guardsmen, who gave their lives in the operation to establish a beachhead on Luzon, are shrouded in canvass, awaiting burial at sea. They were killed when the USS Callaway, a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport, was hit squarely in the superstructure during a Japanese bomber attack off Luzon. There were upwards of 50 casualties. In a few moments, the bodies of these American boys will drop from beneath the folds of their American flag to graves in the South China Sea, as the Callaway proceeds on its way toward the Lingayen Gulf beachhead.
