An Anglo-Dutch fleet bombarded Algiers on August 27, 1816. European ships and munitions were deadly enough to devastate the Algerian fleet, harbor, and defenses. The 9 hours attack brought Omar Agha, the Dey of Algiers and Ottoman Governor, into negotiations resulting in a Treaty on Sept. 24, 1816. With it, Omar Agha freed about 1,200 Christian slaves, the hostage British Consul, and repaid £80,000 ransom money taken in 1816  (BSLOC_2019_6_180)

The USS Cumberland was sunk by the CSS Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimack, on March 8, 1862 during the American Civil War. The sinking occurred off Newport News, Virginia, and was a demonstration of the ironclad's superiority in battle. Sailors who have abandoned ship are being rescued by nearby small sailboats and rowboats.
