The Battle of Tsushima was a major naval battle fought between Russia and Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. It was fought on 27-28 May 1905 (14-15 May in the Julian calendar then in use in Russia) in the Tsushima Strait located between Korea and southern Japan.

The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking-the first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treaties-granted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System. The failure of the treaty to satisfy British goals of improved trade and diplomatic relations led to the Second Opium

German re-armament and militarisation: Second World War pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. After sinking nine Allied merchant ships in the Atlantic, she was tracked down by British warships in December 1939 and was damaged in he ensuing Battle of the River Plate. She put into Montevideo for repairs where she could stay for 72 hours. Rather than face destruction by waiting enemy warships and lose the lives of his whole crew, Captain Langsdorff scuttled his ship at the harbour estuary on 17 December. There was a huge growth in the building of dreadnoughts (all-big-gun battleships) since the first built by Britain in 1905 - the trigger for a naval arms race among the major powers in the years leading up to World War I.
