Minute Seems Like An Hour To This Comet -- In the cause of improved safety for British civil aviation, this Comet jetliner - pictured to-day (Wednesday) - is being 'tested to death' at the Royal Aeronautical Establishment, Farnborough, Hampshire.The machine (a worn-out prototype not representative of the Comets in operational use) is seen undergoing a fatigue test by the 'slow-loading' method, in which the wings are bounced up and down automatically by powerful hydraulic rams. One minute of testing time is equal to about one hour of actual flight (in flight, fatigue is produced mainly by guest or bumps as the aircraft proceeds through the air, forcing the wings upwards or downwards). The Spirit of St. Louis is wheeled onto the flying field at Le Bourget in Paris after repairs were made on the plane. The fuselage was damaged by jubilant crowds of welcomers who carried off parts of the plane as souvenirs when Lindbergh landed on May 21, 1927.
