The caption for this illustration reads: Polo Post Futurum. It is taken from the Punch Almanac for 1873. Its date is December 17, 1872. Punch, or TheLondon Charivari,was a British weekly magazine of humor and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.

How to Escape Winning November 22, 1791 Thomas Rowlandson This print and its companion, "How to Escape Losing" (59.533.437) respond to a pair of races held at Newmarket, on October 20 and 21, 1791. Centered on the Prince of Wales's prize thoroughbred Escape, these launched a scandal since, in the first, Escape was favored to win but finished last of four. The next day, Escape won handily over two of the same rivals, rewarding both the Prince and his jockey Samuel Chifney for bets placed at odds increased by the horse's recent loss. Accusations of cheating ensured and an investigation was launched by Sir Charles Bunbury, head of the Jockey Club. Although Chifney swore he had not held Escape back in the first race he was, perhaps unjustly, prevented from running further races and the Prince sold his stables soon after; he did stand by Chifney, however, and continued to pay him a generous salary.. Betting The Betting Post January 1, 1799 Thomas Rowlandson Men on horseback jostle one another here to place bets near a race already underway. At right, the celebrated thoroughbred owner Dennis O'Kelly wears a blue coat and watches from his white mount, holding crutches needed for gout. The Prince of Wales, at left in a red coat, points towards the action. The print comes from a group by Rowlandson devoted to moments in horse racing--interestingly none shows a finish. When first published around 1789, the titles were "The Mount," "The Start," "The Betting Post," and "The Course." The present example comes from an expanded reissue of 1798-99 with titles altered to "Mounting" (59.533.1697), "Racing" (59.533.1694), "Betting" (59.533.1695), with "Between Heats" (59.533.514, 59.533.1700), and "Weighing" (59.533.1696) and "Running out of the Course" (59.533.1698) added..
