Punch, or TheLondon Charivari,was a British weekly magazine of humor and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.

This inage shows The return of ulysses by the German-French painter L F Schutzenberger (died 1903). According to the Greek legend as told by Homer in the 'Odyssey,' when the hero Odysseus returned home to Ithaca from the Trojan War, a journey that had taken him 20 years, he found his palace overrun with suitors vying for the hand of his wife. At the gates to the city was his faithful dog Argus, who had pined for his master those long years and, upon seeing him again, died.
