Sidewalk Grocer, Bleecker Street, New York. Doris Ulmann, photographer (American, 1882 - 1934) about 1925-1930 This grocer in New York's Greenwich Village most likely became Doris Ulmann's subject through an introduction by John Jacob (Jack) Niles (1892-1980), her assistant. She did not habitually photograph people on the street, either in New York or in the Southern communities she visited, so this image, part of a rare series of vegetable sellers and other sidewalk vendors, may have been done at Niles's suggestion. Each of at least ten New York merchants represented in the albums at the University of Oregon struck several poses for Ulmann, usually looking away from the camera. This man appears to have been the most comfortable, perhaps because he was better acquainted with Niles. In fact, he may have been a subject for Niles, a musician, as well as for Ulmann, the photographer. Niles, at one point an aspiring opera singer, was at the time composing a musical drama called The King of

Portrait of Miss Katy, South Carolina. Doris Ulmann, photographer (American, 1882 - 1934) about 1929-1931 Doris Ulmann photographed Miss Katy for Julia Peterkins Roll, Jordan, Roll (1933) (https://primo.getty.edu). The text adjacent to the portrait, a first-person account delivered, as in much of the book, in dialect, tells of the pain in Miss Katy's life caused by the working of roots (a conjuring) and of the consolation that the pipe and praying have brought her. Both Peterkin (1880-1961) and Ulmann were concerned with this woman as an individual, not just as the timeworn type of peasant portrayed by English and French Realist painters of the nineteenth century. She is, actually, one of the few people pictured in Roll, Jordan, Roll who can be fully identified. According to Susan Williams, Peterkin's biographer, Miss Katy Jones had been the subject of an earlier Peterkin sketch called "Roots Work," which became a kind of starting point for a cycle of short stories published in 1924 as
