The R101 Airship, riding at her home mast at Cardington, Bedford, seen behind the two massive Airship Hangars. R101 was a British rigid airship completed in 1929 as part of the Imperial Airship Scheme. After initial flights and two enlargements to the lifting volume, it crashed on October 5, 1930, in France, during its maiden overseas voyage, killing 48 people. The Bennie Railplane, 1930, (1933). 'The George Bennie railplane is an astounding device by which existing railways could be speeded up for passenger traffic. Stream-lined cylindrical cars driven by air-screws fore and aft are suspended from a steel girder.' The Railplane was a high-level electrically powered suspended monorail system, brainchild of Scottish inventor George Bennie, and designed by engineer Hugh Fraser. A prototype was installed over an LNER siding to Burnbrae Dyeworks at Milngavie, near Glasgow, in 1930, however Bennie was never able to get sufficient financial backing to deve

Black and white photograph relating to the wreck of the ship Pourquois-Pas near Iceland, captained by Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936); funeral service of Charcot and his companions at Notre Dame in Paris. Pourquoi Pas IV was the fourth ship built for Jean-Baptiste Charcot, which completed the second Charcot expedition of the Antarctic regions from 1908 to 1910. Charcot died aboard when the ship was wrecked on 16 September 1936, off the coast of Iceland. Of the forty men on board, only one survived.
