From the sixteenth century, missionaries intent on imposing Catholic doctrine and Christian morality on native people promoted domestic scenes of the Holy Family such as The Carpenters Shop in Nazareth as models for proper family conduct. An oratory would also have been an apt location for a painting such as the Christ Child with Passion Symbols, whose emblematic elements made it particularly suitable for devotion. Views in Hutzel collection are of interior frescoes (14th c.). German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

In the early 1900s, a Chinese Daoist named Wang Yuanlu appointed himself guardian of some of the Mogao Caves. Wang discovered a walled up area behind one side of a corridor leading to a main cave. Behind the wall was a small cave stuffed with an enormous hoard of manuscripts dating from 406 to 1002 CE. These included old hemp paper scrolls in Chinese and many other languages, paintings on hemp, silk or paper, numerous damaged figurines of Buddhas, and other Buddhist paraphernalia. The subject matter in the scrolls covers diverse material. Along with the expected Buddhist canonical works are original commentaries, apocryphal works, workbooks, books of prayers, Confucian works, Daoist works, Nestorian Christian works, works from the Chinese government, administrative documents, anthologies, glossaries, dictionaries, and calligraphic exercises. Wang sold the majority of them to Aurel Stein in 1907 for 220 pounds.

The unidentified artist who painted this bucolic scene, dominated by the figure of the sixteenth-century Portuguese monk Saint John of God holding the infant Christ, was part of a European-influenced painting tradition that first developed in the sixteenth century in Spanish colonial Cuzco, Peru. Delicate flowers, birds, and trees spread across the composition, unifying the saint with vignettes of the Flight into Egypt at left and other saints at right. Eighteenth-century estate inventories in New Spain described these types of paintings as landscapes inhabited by saints.” Although similar religious subjects hung in churches in colonial Peru, the prominence of landscape made this kind of painting equally desirable for private collectors. Umbria Perugia Spello S. Maria della Rotonda8. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Located on the outskirts of Spello, this church stands in a state of semi-dilapidation among tall grasses and cypress trees. It was built on a Greek cross plan with an octagonal cupola and attached cloisters. The Renaissance portal (1517) remains shut as the key is now lost. Interior views focus on the octagonal cupola, the three altarpieces, and their frescoes which are all in urgent need of repair. The large main altarpiece acts as a choir screen, and separates one arm of the church from the rest of the interior. Subjects of the altar frescoes (by Mezzastris) include the Madonna Lactans, the Madonna and Child between Pope Gregory and St. Michael, the Virgin and St. Anne, the Annunciation, the Coronation of the Virgin, and Saints Peter and Michael. These three paintings, illustrating two of Hinduisms great romantic-devotional poems, show episodes during which Radha becomes jealous of Krishnas other lovers and refuses to see him; all involve a female confidante, known as a sakhi, who works diligently to reunite the lovers. In the page from the Sat Sai, the sakhi berates Radha for torturing herself over Krishnas infidelities. In the two pages from Gita Govinda manuscripts, the sakhi delivers messages between the god and Radha. In the night scene, Krishna, ever impish, eavesdrops on the womens conversation. Palestine is a name given to the geographic region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. The region is also known as the Land of Israel, the Holy Land and the Southern Levant.
