Lazio Rieti Amatrice S. Francesco. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Medieval: Architecture, architectural sculpture. S. Francesco is a large Romanesque/Gothic church, dating to the late 14th century. The facade has a richly ornamented portal. In the lunette of the portal are figures of polychromed terracotta representing the Madonna and Child with 2 angels. Post-medieval: Views of the exterior and interior, including: wooden pulpit, Baroque altar and tabernacle, sculpture, frescoes. The walls within the church are covered with fresco decoration from the 15th century by artists of the Marche school. The Nativity, the Madonna Enthroned with Saints, the Tree of Jesse, the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Last Judgment are some of the scenes depicted. The church also contains a Baroque altar created by Giovanni Battista Gigli, created to house a gothic reliquary attributed to Pietro Vannini (1472). Religious paintings in private chapels often had both didactic and devotional purposes. From the sixteenth century, missionaries intent on imposing Catholic doctrine and Christian morality on native people promoted domestic scenes of the Holy Family such as The Carpenters Shop in Nazareth as models for proper family conduct. An oratory would also have been an apt location for a painting such as the Christ Child with Passion Symbols, whose emblematic elements made it particularly suitable for devotion. Views of the interior include: a stoup, 17th century wood pulpit, altar paintings, marble altar and baroque altarpiece with details of sculptures and paintings. Most views are of the 14th century frescoes. On the entrance wall is a curious scene of the Last Judgment: Christ in a mandorla sits enthroned among various saints, music-making angels, Virgins and Patriarchs; three saints kneel below him, one in bishops' robes and two in Capuchin habit; instruments of the Passion lay on a table. In the lower register, nude souls cross a bridge, are judged by St. Michael, and then climb up a palm tree to enter a house whereupon they are clothed and dance. Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels Workshop of Bernardino Luini (Italian, Milanese School, circa 1480-1532). Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels, mid-16th century. Oil on poplar panel, 96 3/4 x 54 1/16 in. (245.7 x 137.3 cm). The Christ Child is depicted holding a glass sphere, which identified him to Renaissance audiences as lux mundi, the light of the world. This painting is a replica, created in the workshop of Bernardino Luini, of the central section of Luinis 1523 altarpiece in the Basilica of San Magno in Legnano (near Milan). It was common in Renaissance Italy for artists and their studios to produce copies of their celebrated works for private clients and churches. Small incision marks (only visible when seen illuminated from one side, at an oblique angle) suggest that this composition was based on the same preparatory drawing as the original altarpiece.
