The 'Asia' was built in 1811 and is depicted off Hong Kong between 1831 and 1832. Huggins has painted her in starboard broadside, flying the red ensign and distinguishing flags. Chinese junks are shown to left and right of her, with more European ships in the distance depicted in front of what may be 'Lintin' (Nei Lingding) Island. The subject of Indiamen in the East was a popular one with Huggins who began his working life at sea and served in the East India Company as a steward and assistant purser on board the 'Perseverance', which sailed for Bombay and China in December 1812, returning in August 1814.

Rough Sea with a Dutch Yacht. Originally from Emden in Germany, Ludolf Bakhuysen specialized in marine painting in Amsterdam. In this seascape he depicted various types of ships sailing on choppy water and under a dramatic cloudy sky. At the right is a yacht with a grand showing of the flag. Bakhuysen placed his signature on the fluttering flag. In the left foreground is a fisherman pulling his nets into a little boat. In the background is a warship lying at anchor that has just fired a salute.

The Cable Fleet Leaving Ireland, July 1858 1865-66 Robert Charles Dudley British One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. Dudley documented the process in a series of watercolors and oils, this example showing the H.M.S. Agamemnon preparing to leave Ireland in 1858. On July 29th it met the U.S.S. The Home Fleet Saluting the State Barge. A row of ships lies at anchor. Two yachts fire a salute for the functionaries rowing by in a state barge. Thewaters smooth, mirror-like surface reflects the vessel and its passengers. Van de Cappelle superbly captured the grandeur unfolding on the water, with ships as far as the eye can see rendered in perspective, under an imposing cloudy sky.

Marine 1650 Salomon van Ruysdael Dutch This well-preserved picture is one of a number that Van Ruysdael painted in Haarlem about 1650, following Jan van Goyen's somewhat earlier example.
