Engraving of the Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company's paddle-steamer 'Forth'. Built in Leith in 1841, the 'Forth' went missing between Southampton and the West Indies early in 1841. It was later discovered that she had been wrecked on the Alacranes Reef, Gulf of Mexico, fortunately without loss of life. Date: 1849

The USS Merrimack, was a 60 gun steam frigate, commissioned in 1856 and named for the Merrimack River. She was burned on April 20, 1861, before the Confederates captured the Norfolk Navy Yard. They salvaged her hull for conversion to the ironclad gunboat, the CSA Virginia, during the US Civil War (BSLOC_2018_8_24)

The Arctic search ship HMS Pandora

Engraving showing HMS 'Discovery' (on left) and HMS 'Alert', seen just prior to the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. In the summer of 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS 'Alert' and HMS 'Discovery', to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. Although the attempt was unsuccessful, a new 'furthest North' record was set, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were charted and much scientific data gathered. Date: 1875

Danish Training Ship Arrives In New York -- Making its First to New York as part of Denmark's program of participation in the New York World's Fair, The Danish State Merchant Marine training ship Danmark, carrying 120 cadets, is seem as she sailed into lower bay today for a two week stay. The visit is an official one, and is part of the program of celebrations arranged by the Danish Government, which began with a visit by Denmark's crown Prince and Princess last May for the official opening of the Danish Pavilion at the fair.
