Allegorical Figure Representing Europe Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo Italian This work is part of a series of the allegorical representations of the Four Continents that originally served as overdoors. Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo based his figure of Europe on symbols codified in Cesare Ripas Iconologia (1593): the scepter signifying her power and the model of a church signifying the preeminence of Catholicism. Like representations of saints or other figures that artists aimed to identify, these attributes were important signals to historical audiences, though in the case of the Four Continents, they eventually fed into racialized stereotypes. Like the other large-scale allegorical frescoes in this gallery, this panel was probably detached around 1900 from the Palazzo Valle Marchesini Sala in Vicenza.. A Mounted Prince Hunting Lion in a Rocky Landscape, c. 1600. Khem Karan (Indian). Opaque watercolor on paper; page: 33 x 22.2 cm (13 x 8 3/4 in.). A Mughal prince encounters a lion in the wilderness and, maintaining his composure, dispatches it with a single blow of his sword. Equally fearless, his horse lunges toward the wild animal, one foreleg turning in to counter the force of the blow. This image recalls the feats of a Persian epic hero. This drawing may have been a study for a full-color composition. The areas of white around the key figures indicate that the artist was working out the ideal positioning of features and elements. The prince is calm and confident, in contrast to the anxious expression on the face of his attendant. The lion hunt is an ancient kingship display of courage and power, especially in Iran and the Near East-areas to which the Mughals trace their cultural roots. As though by contrast in the background, a shepherd tends sheep in the peace and safety assured

The Conversion of Saint Paul Made 1587-1589 Italy. This large and elaborate study for an altarpiece (illustrated below) in the Church of San Francesco in the Italian city of Bologna rivals the final painting in its ambition. The artist invented a mixed pen-and-oil technique to evoke in his drawings the kind of spectacular contrasts between light and dark characteristic of his paintings. The drawingís bold technique and sharply opposing diagonals generate a drama of centrifugal force as Saint Paul, struck by a flash of light, falls from his rearing horse and soldiers rush to his rescue.. Pen and iron-gall ink, with brush and iron-gall ink wash, heightened with white oil paint, over traces of black chalk, on laid paper prepared with a brown oil wash, laid down on paper .
