Mercury and Cupid late 1630s Francesco Fanelli Born and trained in Florence, Francesco Fanelli established his family workshop in Genoa (1605-1625). His wide-ranging talents as a designer, marble carver, and bronze founder caught the attention of a youthful English court eager to elevate its prestige with lavish artistic commissions in the novel Baroque style. In 1632, at the height of his career, Fanelli settled in London and was awarded a pension from Charles I (1600-1649; reigned 1625-1649) who appointed him royal sculptor three years later. During his eight years of service (1632-39) Fanelli worked on a variety of sculptural projects large and small for the king and important noble patrons. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of part of the former Villa Frigeri, which along with a neighboring palazzo, houses the Museo Nazionale di Antichita. Views also of the gardens, fountain (17th century) and the restored interior. The so-called "Capestrano Warrior" (5th century B.C.) is found in the Antiquities core collection under Men, Youths, Warriors--Stone--Etruscan, Italic. Hutzel views include statues, funerary monuments, portrait busts and mosaics, many of which were excavated from Alba Fucens. Bust of an American Indian Modeled 1848-1849 United States. Most mid-19th-century artists relied on romantic, often inaccurate conceptions of Native Americans, yet some, including Henry Kirke Brown, traveled west hoping to attain firsthand knowledge of their subjects. In September and October 1848, Brown journeyed to Michiganóthen the American frontieróto create models of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians in preparation for a sculpture commissioned by the American Art Union. The Sergeant 1904, cast before 1939 Frederic Remington American "The Sergeant" is Remingtons smallest sculpture and one of his most commercially successful. The bust of a weathered, mustachioed Rough Rider commends the cowboys who volunteered for service in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Wild Man 16th century Flemish This statuette was included, hors catalogue, in the 1980 exhibition at The Cloisters, The Wild Man: Medieval Myth and Symbolism.”[1 The hirsute species survived well into the sixteenth century, notably in the imagery of Albrecht Dürer, but in an increasingly heraldic role. Our example no doubt brandished a club in his raised right hand and with his lowered left (where there are remains of a pin) steadied a shield, as did the Wild Men that functioned as supporting figures or finials on various earlier utensils.[2 He might have served as either a support or a finial for an object such as a large tankard; wide holes in his seat and in the top of his head indicate that the place of attachment could have been at either end. The Linsky Wild Man illustrates the fundamental conservatism of dinanderie as it survived into the sixteenth century, the only novelty being the diamond-shaped gouges that characterize his hairy hide.[James David Draper, The Jack and Bell

Date: late 4th century B.C..This magnificent incense burner is embellished with a figure of Marsyas, the ill-fated satyr who was punished for his hubris by Apollo. We see him bound to the shaft of the incense burner where he will be flayed alive.
