Mid-Ocean Transfer by Breeches Buoy. Over the chasm between two ships in the mid-Atlantic, an ailing merchant seaman is transferred by breeches buoy from his ship to a Coast Guard combat cutter for medical treatment. The buoy is rigged after a line is fired from one ship to the other. It is used when the launching of small boats is deemed inadvisable.
