The Gokstad ship was built around 890 AD, at the height of the Viking period. It was a fast and flexible ship that was suitable for voyages on the high seas. A large burial mound called 'the king's mound' was situated at the farm of Gokstad in Sandefjord municipality of Norway. In autumn 1879 the two teenage sons on the farm were bored and started to dig into the mound. A ship was said to lie in the burial mound, and it was this that the boys found. .

Royal Brigantine. Built in 1778 by order of Queen Maria I of Portugal (1734-1816), by the Royal Naval Shipyard (Real Arsenal da Marinha) in Lisbon, for the betrothal of Prince John (Joao), the future King John VI (Joao VI). After that it passed to the official service of the Royal Household. The construction and design was the work of Torquato José Clavina, foreman ship's carpenter at the Naval Arsenal. The gilded wood was crafted by the artist Manuel Vieira. Its last service was the transfer of Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom across the Tagus River, on the occasion of her official visit to Portugal in 1957. General view from the bow.
