Dutch athlete Mrs Fanny Blankers-Koen was a star of the 1948 London Olympics, becoming the first woman ever to win three Olympic titles. She won the 100 and 200 metres, and the 80 metres hurdles. She was also the finishing runner in the victorious Dutch relay team. She received a hero's welcome on return to Amsterdam. 1948

Woman in White Gives Sensational Start to Olympic - A woman, dressed in white flowing robes, is escorted from the rostrum in the stadium here during the opening ceremony of the 1952 Olympic Games. The woman, Barbara Ratraut Player, a West German student, made a mad dash round the track and ran up to the rostrum, where she seized the microphone and attempted to address the Vast crowd.
