A collection of vintage sports scenes including American football, cricket, soldiers playing football, women's skating races, and tennis matches from the late 19th century.

Vignettes showing scenes at Wimbledon in 1887, including several of the fifteen year old Miss Lottie Dod serving the ball in the year she first won the Championship. Lottie Dod (1871-1960) was an all-round sportswoman, tennis player and five times Wimbledon champion. Excelled in golf, hockey and archery as well as tennis. Won a silver medal in archery at the 1908 Olympics and was the youngest person ever to win a ladies singles title at Wimbledon. She is listed along with Babe Zaharias as being

The Champion Single Sculls (Max Schmitt in a Single Scull) 1871 Thomas Eakins American Returning to Philadelphia from Europe in 1870, Eakins began a series of representations of the sport of sculling, a subject for which he is uniquely identified. This is the first major work in that series of paintings and watercolors. It is believed to commemorate the victory of Max Schmitt (1843-1900), an attorney and skilled amateur rower, in an important race on the Schuylkill River in October 1870.
