Date: A.D. 14-68.Copy of a Greek work of the second century B.C.During the Hellenistic period, artists became concerned with the accurate representation of childhood, old age, and even physical deformity. The range of subject matter was extended to include genre-like figures from the fringes of society. Fine, large-scale statues of fishermen, peasants, and aged courtesans became valued religious dedications, sometimes placed in a park-like setting within thesanctuary of the god. Although this statue is known familiarly as The Old Market Woman, it probably represents an aged courtesan on her way to a festival of Dionysos, the god of wine. Her delicate sandals and the ample material in her thin, elaborately draped chiton are a far cry from the rough garb of a peasant woman. The ivy wreath on her head marks her association with Dionysos, and the basket of fruit and the two chickens must be dedicatory

Angel, c. 1250. France, vicinity of Reims, 13th century. Walnut with traces of gilding and polychromy; overall: 78.5 x 37 x 23.8 cm (30 7/8 x 14 9/16 x 9 3/8 in.). Surviving in fragmentary condition, this pair of angels lacks lower arms, hands, wings, and attributes. Their original paint and gilding, now almost entirely lost, once rendered their garments a rich brocade and their hair a luxuriant gold. Nonetheless, in their graceful poses and sublime faceswhich may portray tragic interest, anguish, or deep concerntheir original delicacy and power are still evident. They embody the monumental style of 13th-century High Gothic cathedral sculpture in France. Their style specifically suggests they were carved in or around Reims, possibly by sculptors associated with the cathedral there. Their original placement is unknown, but they may have flanked an altar on columns.

Terracotta statuette of a draped goddess late 5th-4th century B.C. Greek A lack of preserved attributes makes the identification of this majestic female figure elusive. She may have held a cornucopia, which would identify her as the personification of good fortune, Agathe Tyche. Alternatively, she could represent a youthful goddess such as Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. The statuesque figure echoes monumental sculpture in marble and bronze of the time. Nydia, The Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii Modeled 1855-1856 Rome. This statue is based on a character from Edward Bulwer-Lyttonís popular 1834 novel The Last Days of Pompeii. In the episode depicted here, Nydia and her two companions attempt to flee the city after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The three become separated, however, and Randolph Rogers captured Nydia as she gropes her way through the burning city. The broken Corinthian column at her feet symbolizes fallen Pompeii, and Nydiaís clinging garments, entangled in her staff, indicate her chaotic surroundings. Because of its narrative quality, sentimental presentation, and classical features and proportions, this sculpture was extremely popular with the American public upon its first being exhibited.. The tomb was surrounded by 24 figures of mourning family members and ancestors, known as weepers (pleurants). They symbolized the importance of the Burgundy dynasty. These ten figures are all that remain.

Date: end of the 6th century B.C..The base and feet are modern; the bird is heavily restored and probably does not belong to he sculpture. The tresses on the shoulders, draping of the garments, and slight smile indicate the progressive influence of eastern Greek sculpture on that of Cyprus during he sixth century B.C. he figure's headgear, however, demonstrates the persistence of indigenous traditions. Indeed, here it is particularly remarkable, with the vertical zones of lotus motifs and the head of a bull at the top. Traces of pigment indicate that the figure was once painted. On his left shoulder are remains of a Cypriot syllabic inscription that have been read as "of the Paphian Goddess." Limestone statue of a male votary holding a bird in the left hand ca 500-450 B.C. Cypriot The feet and the right hand are missing. The left leg is advanced and both arms are lowered with hands extended. The left hand holds a bird and a small pyxis, the right, a branch attached to the arm. The body is covered by a chiton with long, U-shaped folds and a pleated surface. A long garment with U-shaped folds is draped over the shoulders and chest. The neck is thick. The face has a smiling expression, the tip of the nose is broken. The almond-shaped eyes are surmounted by high-set eyebrows. Over the forehead, ears, and nape of the neck is a roll of rectangular locks. A wreath of vertical leaves is set on the rounded head, with locks summarily indicated.
