Few who watched Knew that Bergelin is suffering from diabetes and his to have regular insulin treatment which makes him feel ***** and very tired, as he describes it. In the national ballot organised by the Sporting Record, Gordon Pirie, Britain's famous runner, was chosen as the Sportsman of the Year. Miss. Alice Marble (1913-1990), American tennis player, who was the first woman to win both the US Open and Wimbledon singles titles in the same year, as well as the ladies' doubles and mixed doubles. She also pioneered the wearing of shorts for tennis, first in 1932 and in 1950, spoke out supporting the black tennis player, Althea Gibson and encouraging the public to accept black and homosexual tennis players into the game.
