Incised furniture plaque with two ibexes flanking a stylized palmette tree ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian Two kneeling ibexes, identified as juveniles by their short, curling horns, flank a stylized palmette tree on this rectangular plaque. It was found with several other plaques carved in a similar style at the base of the throne platform in the Throne Room of the Temple of Nabu (the Babylonian god of writing and wisdom) at Nimrud. The location suggests that these ivories may have originally been used to decorate a piece of royal furniture such as a throne. Two dowel holes that pierce the plaque were probably used to fasten it to a frame or other backing that has not survived. Because they share motifs and images with the monumental stone reliefs that lined the walls of Assyrian palaces, ivories with incised decoration like this one have been attributed to an Assyrian style. Certain details, including the stylized palmette tree, and elaborately incised musculature of these ibexes,

The coat of arms is thought to belong to either the von Meissau or the Eglauer family, both of Austria. On the banderoles is the defiant motto IO HARR · LAS UBER GAN (possibly, "Just wait. You'll be beaten"). Part of the motto, IO HARR, is repeated around the border. The shield comes from Reifenstein castle, in the Austrian Tirol. Textile Fragments , c. 50-650. Peru, Moche, north coast, 1st-7th century. Cotton and camelid fiber; overall: 40 x 25.4 cm (15 3/4 x 10 in.). These fragments are rare survivors of catastrophic rains that destroyed much of the Moche textile legacy and may have helped to bring about the decline of Moche culture. Each depicts a serpent and a snail beneath a hovering raptorial birdperhaps a snail kite, a type of hawk named after its favored food. The size of the motifs implies that the original textile was large; a mantle (a shawl-like garment) or a hanging are among the possibilities.

Date: ca. 1475-80.The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played.
