Twining snakes at back of each bird-woman's neck. Wide borders showing repeats of a man's figure between two griffons (apotheosis of Alexander), and pearled guard bands. Smaller roundel overlaid at four tangent points of large roundels, with central rosette and inscription border. Velvet Fragment with Scrolling Floral Vine Design 16th century The motifs on this small fragment of a velvet panel are characteristic of non-figural Safavid examples also found on carpets. These include a floral vine on red ground border and a meandering vegetal pattern in olive green with blue and red accents on a beige ground in the central field. The Safavids controlled a highly-developed textile industry in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Silk textiles produced in the royal workshop were used primarily for court consumption and export. The compound weave of this brocaded velvet that utilizes metal-wrapped threads is representative of the sophisticated production of silk in Iran at this time.. Fragment Italian 16th century

Sleeve from a Tunic, 700s. Egypt, Umayyad period (661-750) or Abbasid period (750-1258). Wool; plain weave with slit-tapestry weave; overall: 31.7 x 34.3 cm (12 1/2 x 13 1/2 in.); mounted: 41.3 x 46.4 cm (16 1/4 x 18 1/4 in.). Classical figures and winged animals remained popular during the early Islamic period. The nude male may portray Dionysus, Greek god of wine; he holds his thyrsus, a staff ornamented with ivy leaves and pine cones, as he pours liquid from a small jug for the panther. These colorful designs would have decorated the front or back of a tunic and one sleeve. Elaborate embellishments were cherished. Thus, once a tunic began to fray, its decoration was sewn onto a new one, as seen on this winter-weight woolen tunic cloth. Its finely detailed motifs, some with eccentric drawing, are woven in tapestry weave, the equivalent of painting with weft thread; discontinuous horizontal wefts are interlaced only where needed in the design.

Hanging with Polychrome Columns 5th-6th century This grand hanging is part of a set of at least four that also included depictions of colorful columns topped by heads in medallions. The pieces were excavated from a grave where they had been used as shrouds, but several features indicate that they were originally employed as curtains. Their large scale precludes the function of clothing and the thinness of their material suggests they were meant to be seen from both sides. Depictions of architecture on contemporary mosaics often show curtains hanging between columns, suggesting that pieces such as this may have been hung one after another in an arcade..
