Kesa Made 1875-1900 Japan. This vestment represents deluxe production that combines a complicated pattern with lavish materials. Round medallions containing a dragon or crane are set against a network of sinuous interlaced wisteria scrolls on a dense and rich gold ground of gilt-paper strip (kinran). The kesa survives in fine condition complete with its matching stole. A very similar robe, but with roundels containing pairs of birds, belongs to the MusÈe des Tissus in Lyon, France.. Silk and gilt-paper strip; twill weave with secondary binding warps and supplementary patterning wefts with couched plied silk; silk cords .

Roundel with Winged Horse 9th century The extended tongue and long tail of this winged creature suggest that it may be a griffin, a part-lion, part-eagle emblem of power and protection common to the Byzantine and islamic worlds. The ultimate inspiration for this fragment may have been Sasanian, as it also resembles a winged horse with beribboned feet. Traces of another medallion at the lower edge of this piece suggest that it may have come from a hanging or other textile decorated with a repeat pattern of such roundels.. Fragments, before 1968. Iran or Iraq, in the style of the Seljuq period (1037-1194). Silk: lampas weave; average: 49 x 33 cm (19 5/16 x 13 in.). Geometric medallions aligned on a diaper ground are enclosed in a grid of large and small lozenges. Medallions contain confronting peacocks flanking a Tree of Life. The double border has an inner frieze of running animals and an outer band of Kufic inscription. The larger diamonds contain four-directional palmette trees and two opposed pairs of rampant animals. The smaller diamonds have pairs of peacocks in each corner framing an octagon, which contains two opposed pairs of animals flanking a central lozenge. Floral vines and ornaments fill the interspaces of large and small diamonds.

Granary Door, 19th century, 42 1/2 x 27 in. (108.0 x 68.6 cm), Wood, pigment, Côte d'Ivoire, 19th century, Granaries made of dried mud and wood were used to store grain from the villager's fields. The doors to these storage units were often carved and painted with animals such as the fish, horse and crocodile on this door which relate to Senufo stories and agriculture.
