Calling Cab "R For Robert -- Practical bid to ***** taxi fares and petrol consumption is being put up by a handful of ambitious ex-servicemen who are running "Operation Progress" at Dulwich, London. Claiming to be the first car hire firm to incorporate radio-telephony in its cabs, the organization, under its owner or Dunkirk and Burma man Leslie White, runs a fleet of cars directly controlled from a central transmitter. Drivers are "called up" and told of their next assignment, thus saving time and patrol wasting trips "back to base". Equipment for mach cab, manufactured by Pye Telecommunications, Cambridge, costs amount £150. December 1, 1947.
