On March 13, 1854, American presents were delivered at Yokohama, in a building constructed next to the 'Treaty House', for the purpose of their display. There was a miniature railroad engine that ran on a circular tract at 20 miles per hours, a telegraphic apparatus, and other goods produced in the US. The mission's goals were to open trade with Japan, and establish coaling stations for the emerging 'steam navy' (BSLOC_2019_7_65)

Sugar cane is fed into grooved iron rollers that crush the cane, producing cane juice. The juice runs down the grooves into a cistern, from where it travels via a pipe to the boiling-house. The waste material produced, known as megass, is collected and dried, ultimately to be used as fuel for the furnaces of the boiling-house Date: 1849

This 1896 illustration shows hydraulic mining being used by gold miners in the far West of the United States. Hydraulic mining is a form of mining that uses high-pressure jets of water to dislodge rock material or move sediment. The practice is an ancient one, but in modern times, it began to be used in the mid-1800s. Its environmental effect is very negative on lands that border rivers and streams. High-pressure water jets have also been used in the underground mining of coal, to break up the coal seam and wash the resulting coal slurry toward a collection point.
